Module 10.3

According to the CDC, suicide remains a leading cause of death in the U.S., with 49,449 deaths in 2023, equating to a rate of 14.9 per 100,000 people. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events occurring before age 18 and are preventable.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are preventable, potentially traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 years:

  • In 2023, males had a suicide rate four times higher than females. Despite males representing 50% of the population, they accounted for nearly 80% of suicides, with firearms being the most common method.

  • Among youth aged 15-24, suicide rates were higher for Native American, Alaskan Native, and White youth compared to Black, Asian, and Hispanic youth.

  • From 2019 to 2023, the suicide rate for Black male youth increased by 47%, and for Asian or Pacific Islander male youth by 40%.

  • For ages 10-22, the 2023 suicide rate was 9.8 per 100,000, highlighting growing mental health challenges.

When addressing suicide concerns with kids aged 10-20, tailor the approach to their developmental stage:

  • Ages 10-12: Use clear language, focus on feelings, encourage expression, and provide reassurance.

  • Ages 13-15: Be honest and age-appropriate, discuss mental health, encourage openness, and monitor social media.

  • Ages 16-18: Talk about mental health openly, empower them with coping strategies, and maintain connection.

  • Ages 19-20: Respect their autonomy, provide mental health resources, and encourage peer support.

Recognize warning signs of emotional struggles, such as behavioral changes, isolation, productivity decline, and mood swings. Encourage kids to watch for these signs in their friends and offer support. Seeking professional help is crucial if warning signs persist.
